Chocolate Topping (Gluten, Dairy & Refined Sugar Free & Paleo)


Who doesn’t love a deliciously warm chocolate sauce?!

Chocolate fudge sauce brings back memories from my younger years, going to our local Pizza Hut restaurant. Those kind of nights were a rare but wonderful treat, something reserved only for special occasions and held huge excitement. Needless to say, I’d go crazy, helping myself to more and more, pumping away on the chocolate fudge tap like it was a bicep workout, watching the waterfall of sauce pour over my ice cream. Later you’d find me lying flat on the couch, not moving, trying to process what just happened to my stomach.

These days I wouldn’t so readily undertake the same activity, but the memory still makes me smile, those nights were a blast!

This fudgey chocolate topping isn’t too sickly sweet, it won’t leave you prone on the couch (maybe unless you eat the whole lot in one go!) but it is the perfect accompaniment to a warm pudding muffin or a bowl of your favourite ice cream. Try it with and without the added chocolate, both variations make a very moreish sauce!




Chocolate Topping (makes approx 2 1/2 cups)


1 cup dates, soaked overnight in a small bowl (fill with hot water until the dates are just covered) – do not drain

1 cup coconut milk

3 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder

1 tsp vanilla extract

pinch salt

optional addition: 50g/1.8oz chocolate (70% cocoa solids or higher – I love Whittakers 72% Dark Ghana)


Place the dates (and the soaking water), coconut milk, cocoa, vanilla, and salt in the blender or food processor and blend until smooth and creamy; a pourable consistency. If it is too thick, add some more coconut milk or a little water until you reach your desired consistency.

Transfer to a small saucepan and heat, while gently stirring, until hot and steamy. If you choose to add the chocolate (for extra chocolatey goodness) then chop it into chunks and add it now while the sauce is hot. Sit for 5 mins and stir to smooth. Otherwise serve warm over your chosen dessert.

Store any unused sauce in the fridge, you can easily reheat it on the stove or with a quick zap in the microwave, otherwise serve it cold. Will keep for 1 week.
